You'll never hear people mention ideal relative humidity in the summer months. The warmer air naturally has more moisture in it, and if anything, we'd like to be rid of some of the stickiness that comes with higher temperatures.
As the temperature drops, however, many homeowners find that the air inside their homes becomes overly dry, leaving skin and lips chapped and hardwood floors susceptible to shrinking and cracking.
Maintaining ideal relative humidity in a home is possible, but it generally requires the introduction of more moisture into the air, especially in older homes. Most people report that they are most comfortable in a home with 45 to 55 percent relative humidity. That's a tough level to maintain without a little help.
Enter the whole-house humidifier. Although they come in several different designs, the concept behind these systems is basically the same across the board. When the forced-air furnace is running, the airflow passes through a hydrated panel or sponge. This allows moisture to be naturally added to the air as it circulates through the system. Because the humidifier is directly attached to the forced-air heating system, it is able to provide constant ideal relative humidity to every room in the house.
