Lower Your Heating Load, And You'll Lower Your Heating Costs Too

Your “heating load” refers to how much energy your furnace has to create to keep your household warm. And there are many factors that influence the heat load. While you can’t control them all, you can certainly have a big effect. Here are a few ways to lower your heating load and save on energy costs this winter.

  • Enhance the efficiency of your ducts. Many homes in Massachusetts are losing vast amounts of energy through leaky and inefficient ductwork. Seal up leaks in accessible ducts with duct mastic (not duct tape). Having sufficient insulation is also important, to stop heat transference through the sheet metal.
  • Weather strip your doors and windows. Weather stripping is easy to apply, and can stop air leaks and drafts. You can also decrease your heating load with “draft snakes” under interior doors.
  • Seal leaks in the shell of the building. Air can also leak around windows and door frames, as well as around penetrations of plumbing and piping fixtures. Caulk can take care of these small gaps.
  • Stop energy losses in rooms you don't use. If you have storage or guest rooms, close the doors, registers, grilles and vents.
  • Install more insulation. You may be losing heat through the walls, and especially through the attic. Even if you have existing insulation, you may not have enough, or it may have been damaged by moisture or pests.
  • Make use of passive solar heat. If possible, keep drapes and blinds open during the day, especially if you have windows on the south or west side of the building. The rest of the time, keep the window dressings closed to retain as much heat as possible.
  • Reverse the motor on your ceiling fans. Running ceiling fans clockwise at a lower speed will direct heat that has risen to the top of the room back down, and keep it circulating, reducing the room’s heating load.

A lower heating load not only eases the stress on your furnace, but may enable you to upgrade to a smaller, less expensive unit altogether. Call Rodenhiser Plumbing, Heating & Air Conditioning if you have questions. We’ll be happy to help you save energy.
