Air conditioning can be an expensive way of keeping our homes comfortable, particularly when summer is at its peak. Here are six ways to minimize A/C usage and give yourself a break on your monthly utility bills.
- Stay cool naturally - Keep windows and doors closed during the hottest part of the day, but ventilate at night to let fresh air in. Ceiling fans can also increase your comfort levels with the windchill effect. Just make sure to turn those fans off when you leave the room.
- Reflect heat away - Applying a reflective coating to your roof can reduce the radiant heat that can easily drive up your home's indoor temperature. White latex and asphalt are two popular choices. Installing a radiant barrier on the underside of your roof can also be a cost effective solution. Also consider adding reflective coatings to the inside of your windows. As well as helping cut the amount of heat coming in, these coatings can also reduce fading of soft furnishings and carpets inside.
- Block the heat - Insulation is a very effective heat blocker which also offers the added bonus of year-round savings. Attic insulation works particularly well, as this is often the hottest part of the house. Another option: shading your house with trees and plants. Trees and vines are particularly good since they also create their own microclimate, reducing the temperature around them.
- Reduce heat-generating sources - Why only minimize A/C usage? There are several other culprits around the home which generate heat, including washers, dryers and dishwashers. Use them during the cooler part of the day, and only run them when you have a full load.
