If you or your family is suffering from health effects after moving to a new home, renovating your home, or treating your home with pesticides, discuss your symptoms with a health professional to find out if they could be the result of indoor air pollution.
You can also identify any possible sources of indoor air pollution, which may include:
- combustion sources: oil, gas, kerosene, coal, wood, and tobacco products
- building materials and furnishings: asbestos-containing insulation, wet or damp carpet, and cabinetry or furniture made of certain pressed wood products
- products: chemical containing products used to clean and maintain households, as well as those used for hobbies
- central heating and cooling systems and humidification devices
- outdoor sources: radon and pesticides
- outdoor air pollution: can leak into poorly insulated homes
In order to maintain good indoor air quality and eliminate sources of pollution, be aware of your activities and work to control their impact:
- Improve your ventilation: increase the amount of outdoor air to bring fresh air into the house.
- Open windows and doors when weather allows, because most heating and cooling units do not bring outdoor air inside.
- Use exhaust fans found in kitchens and bathrooms; they directly remove contaminants to the outdoors.
- Ventilate when possible: whenever doing short-term activities (including painting and maintenance as well as cooking) that generate lots of pollution, make sure to ventilate by opening doors and windows and using exhaust fans.
- Take it outdoors: weather permitting, you may also want to do pollution generating activities outdoors in order to maintain your indoor air quality.
