Defeat Heat Loss and Improve Energy Savings in Your Eastern Massachusetts Home

Heating season is here! According to the federal Energy Star program, around half of the energy used in a household is for heating and cooling. Considering the winters in eastern Massachusetts, that heating part can get expensive. Learning how to prevent heat loss in your home will help maintain your indoor comfort level and help save on energy costs.

heat loss
  • Add insulation to your home - Significant heat loss can occur through the roof and walls of your home. Adding additional insulation can make a big difference in the comfort level of your home.
  • Change air filters - To help keep your heating system running smoothly, change the air filter frequently. Dust and dirt on the filter make your heater run inefficiently, making it harder for the warm air to get through. If your heater works harder all the time, it makes inconvenient breakdowns much more likely.
  • Check and clean heating vents - Check to make sure nothing's blocking the air vents in your home. Such obstructions will keep heat from getting into the room and can be a safety hazard as well. Remove dust and debris from the vents. If your vents seem really dusty and dirty, you may want to have your ducts professionally cleaned.
  • Wrap the water heater - Your hot water heater is a candidate for heat loss as well. Wrapping the water heater is proven to reduce energy usage.
  • Check the exterior of your home – Look for holes, cracks or gaps in the foundation, siding, around doors and windows, and around pipes and outlets. Heat loss can occur even through small holes. Make the necessary repairs.
  • Check the ductwork - Reseal any accessible ducts with foil-backed tape or sealant where the pieces meet. You may also want to insulate them as well, especially if they run on an outside wall.

These tips will help prevent the most common heat loss problems. If you're in the Route 495/128 area of Massachusetts, contact Rodenhiser Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning  for check-up or repairs to your HVAC system and to keep it running efficiently.
