Ways to improve IAQ
- Make a commitment to wash your bedding — sheets, pillowcases and blankets — once a week - Dust and vacuum your bedrooms, too, and consider buying allergen-proof pillow and mattress covers. They help keep those pesky dust mites at bay.
- Make a similar commitment to prevent mold from forming in your bathroom shower stalls and bathtubs - Two steps will help immeasurably: running an exhaust fan while the water's running and for 10 minutes afterward, and cleaning the areas with white vinegar and water once a week. Make the job a snap by mixing a 50-50 solution in a spray bottle and then rinsing the areas with water until they sparkle.
- Keep pets off your furniture and dust and vacuum regularly - Take area rugs outdoors and shake them free of dirt or, better still, wash them once a week.
- Remain diligent about removing food and crumbs from your kitchen counters and floors - Food is a powerful magnet for all kinds of four-legged intruders, and they’re difficult to get rid of once they know where they can feast. The point? Bugs and insects carry allergens and even disease that will reduce your indoor air quality.
- Prohibit smoking indoors where secondhand smoke will impair your indoor air quality - Also, be sure that your fireplace is ventilated properly.
- Place a carbon monoxide detector near your furnace and keep a dehumidifier on to help keep your basement free of mold.
