Starting the cooling season with a clean air filter is one of the best ways to cool your home more efficiently. Dirty filters put a strain on your system, but a clean filter allows air to pass through freely, reducing the amount of energy the air conditioner uses.
Most experts agree that an air conditioner should receive professional maintenance once a year, and it's best to get maintenance out of the way early in the year so that the air conditioner runs at peak efficiency during the height of summer.
You can take care of some maintenance tasks yourself, like cleaning the evaporator and condenser coils and trimming weeds and grass away from the outdoor condensing unit. A certified technician can also check for refrigerant leaks, measure airflow through the evaporator coil and carry out other tasks that may be difficult or impossible to do yourself.
