Cooling costs skyrocket with the arrival of summer in Massachusetts, and efficient A/C operation can save you a bundle. When the weather gets hot, follow these tips to run the air conditioner more efficiently.
A Fresh Start
Starting the cooling season with a clean air filter is one of the best ways to cool your home more efficiently. Dirty filters put a strain on your system, but a clean filter allows air to pass through freely, reducing the amount of energy the air conditioner uses.
Spring Maintenance
Most experts agree that an air conditioner should receive professional maintenance once a year, and it's best to get maintenance out of the way early in the year so that the air conditioner runs at peak efficiency during the height of summer.
You can take care of some maintenance tasks yourself, like cleaning the evaporator and condenser coils and trimming weeds and grass away from the outdoor condensing unit. A certified technician can also check for refrigerant leaks, measure airflow through the evaporator coil and carry out other tasks that may be difficult or impossible to do yourself.
Using the A/C Wisely
The less you have to use the air conditioner, the less you'll have to pay for cooling. There are several ways you can run the A/C less without sacrificing comfort:
- Use ceiling fans to make individual rooms in your house feel cooler. By turning a fan on when you enter a room and then turning it off when you leave, you can use your A/C a lot less, saving both energy and money.
- Install blinds or awnings on south- and west-facing windows to minimize the greenhouse effect of the sun.
- Open your windows at night to let cool air inside, and then close them during the day to seal it in.
- Avoid using heat-producing appliances like dishwashers, ovens and clothes dryers during the day.
