Keeping heating and cooling costs down is a priority for all of us. Although the SEER ratings of your home heating and air conditioning units may not be the first thing you think of when considering energy use, awareness of the ratings can help to maximize energy efficiency and lower utility costs.

SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating and is a measurement of energy efficiency over a period of time (for example, during the summer months for air conditioners). A SEER rating is calculated by measuring cooling output in BTUs (British thermal units) during a typical season divided by total electric energy input in watt-hours during that season. A higher SEER rating equals greater energy efficiency. As of January 1, 2006, the United States has mandated a minimum SEER of 13 for new air conditioners.

Compare the SEER rating for various units before deciding on a purchase. You can find a variety of air conditioning units and SEER ratings by shopping first online. The most efficient units have a SEER rating from 16 - 25. Energy Star appliances are required to have a minimum SEER of 14.
